Programme Philosophy

To appreciate the uniqueness of Raukawa a better understanding of the camp and the area is always helpful.

The YMCA Raukawa Adventure Centre provides outdoor and adventure based learning in an environment where participants are encouraged through challenge-by-choice to step outside their personal comfort zones. The outdoors provides a unique environment “challenging” individual reactions, including behaviours and attitudes more so than in a known and comfortable environment.

Our progressive learning cycle is based on a three stages process: Theme, Activity and Debrief. An introduction session enables Instructors, leaders and participants to find a common level of expectations, program objectives and a general overview of the program and the bigger picture.

The theme is based on the objective for the exercise or camp. The group is encouraged to discuss this theme and come up with how they are going to utilize this in their activities and actions and goals are set for the group and / or individuals.

Outdoor and adventure activity is used to facilitate the learning and outcomes of the group. Activities range from games to technical outdoor sports. Through challenging activities the participants develop new skills and build a portfolio of positive and significant experiences.

After the day’s activities the group comes together to discuss the days outcome. This entails, personal challenges, attitudes before and after the activity, support, learning, fear, the theme and goals etc. Debriefing also takes place during the activity as and when an opportunity arises. Debriefing processes during the program shape and foster positive behaviour / attitudes and monitor the success and general feel of the group. This also builds capacity and capability skills.
